Redwood Tree - You Remind Me
Scars can be beautiful too
Fire has not stopped you but rather advanced you and revealed strength, purpose and the true nature of who you are. Your stately trunk stands proudly, your core hollowed, charred, marked with scars of fire. You survived the flames, bear the scars and yet you thrive! Your branches drawing through your perseverance all the nourishment they need from the earth.
Belonging is key
My
arms extended would fit easily within your core – And yet you do not boast of
yourself. You speak of unity of strength found in joining together. You remind
me to draw strength from those planted near me. To intertwine my roots, stand
close and face the storms together – to be nourished by the trust of community
Stretch and reach for new heights
I
see your new shoots, tiny trunks growing from the fallen giant trunk. A new
start at life – determined to live, reaching for your own piece of sunlight in
the cluttered canopy. You are living on the very foundation created by your
ancestors, their fallen strength now nourished the soil that feeds you and you
reach for even higher heights.
Size is no prediction of greatness
You
remind me of potential promise of greatness hidden within a small unassuming
capsule. A tiny seed within a small tight cone – such a minuscule beginning for
the coming glory and giant of the forest. Towers of strength and beauty your
branches throw their cones to the forest floor, await the heat of fire to
release their captive seeds.
To never lose my wonder
Take the time to stand in awe
I
walk among you, army of giants. Shaded by your canopy, alive with sounds of
wind and birds. I feel the cool of the moisture your needles collect in the
coolness of night and rain down to water the soil rich with those who have gone
before you. The ferns celebrate your investment, and clover carpets the floor.
I feel life surging all around me, overwhelming me with wonder as I stand a
mere speck at the base of your towering form.
Whisper to me of legacy
Teach me of community – of unity – of life
Remind me, O mighty Redwood Tree
Of the purpose and beauty of fire and pain
Whisper to me the truths of potential and pride
Teach me as I walk in the shadow of your greatness
For I am here to learn
